What The Good Life Is About
Tristan is about to turn fifteen and is enjoying the comfortable life his parents built around him. That arrangement of protection, affection and ease does not last long. What he learns afterwards is loneliness, grief and the fact that surviving often comes before living. David Trueba's first feature tells a coming of age story without slipping into sentiment; the losses arrive one after another and the film makes them ordinary rather than dramatic, which is exactly what makes them land. Fernando Ramallo and Lucia Jimenez play the leads. A quiet but solid piece of nineties Spanish cinema.
