What Soldiers of Salamina Is About
David Trueba adapted this from Javier Cercas's novel. Lola, a novelist who has run dry and is working as a teacher and journalist, goes after an incident from the end of the Civil War: Rafael Sánchez Mazas, a writer and one of the founders of the Falange, escaped a mass execution, and the Republican soldier who found him in the woods saw him and did not fire. The film neither absolves Sánchez Mazas nor tries to explain the decision that saved him; what Lola is really looking for is who that unnamed soldier was. Trueba changed the sex of the novel's narrator. It handles a period still argued over in Spain without adopting the language of either the winners or the losers, and it took eight Goya nominations.
