Enrico Berlinguer led the largest communist party in Western Europe and attempted something that looked impossible: putting communists into government in Italy by democratic means, while pulling away from Moscow. Andrea Segre covers the years from 1973 to 1978, opening with the crash in Sofia that Berlinguer believed was an attempt on his life, moving through the historic compromise he negotiated with the Christian Democrat leader Aldo Moro, and ending with Moro's kidnapping and murder by the Red Brigades.
