What Welcome Venice Is About
Andrea Segre's 2021 Italian film is set on the island of Giudecca in Venice. It is built on the disagreement between the sons of a family who for generations have fished moeche, the soft-shell crab of the lagoon. Pietro wants to keep fishing despite the hardship and the loneliness; Alvise sees the house as a way into the property circle that runs the city. The quarrel between the two brothers is really the city's own quarrel: what tourism has done to the relation between Venice and the people who live in it, and how the pandemic made that plainer. It screened in Giornate degli Autori at the 2021 Venice Film Festival.
