What The Great Flamarion Is About
Flamarion is a celebrated vaudeville marksman whose act needs two assistants: Connie and her husband Al. He has built a life on keeping women at a distance, and the moment Connie turns her attention on him he starts breaking every rule he set for himself. A man who calculates every shot on stage turns out to be incapable of counting anything off it. This is early Anthony Mann, made in a cheap studio years before the westerns and the noirs that would make his name, and the trap he builds here is remarkably clean. Erich von Stroheim, an actor known for hardness, plays the breakable one. Seventy-eight minutes, and not a scene in it is spare.
