An old communist near death goes back, from his hospital bed, to his childhood. In the years right after the Second World War, as Stalin’s reach over Eastern Europe grew, children who had lost their families in the war were gathered up and shut into a home; there they were taught ideology and obedience was beaten into them. Lem is one of those children, and when he makes friends with Isak Keyten, newly arrived at the home, he begins for the first time to think that there is such a thing as an outside. Ivo Trajkov’s ninety three minute Macedonian film was adapted from Živko Čingo’s 1971 novel; Sašo Kekenovski plays the boy Lem and Maja Stankovska plays Isak. It was completed in 2004 and is the film Macedonia submitted for the foreign language film Oscar.
