What The Guys from Paradise Is About
The film tells the story of Japanese men who have ended up in prison in a foreign country. The order inside is not the usual one; the rules work less by what is written than by balances established within, and someone arriving from outside has to learn them from scratch. The account uses the familiar moulds of prison films, but its tone keeps shifting; hard scenes are followed by unexpected humour. The director’s known manner shows here as well: no scene stays in the same key for long. According to the record the film set out from real cases of Japanese imprisoned abroad. Koji Kikkawa plays the lead in Takashi Miike’s hundred and fourteen minute Japanese film, completed in 2001.
