What The Hart of London Is About
Jack Chambers’s film works over the tension between nature and London, the city in Ontario where he was born and lived. Archive footage taken from news of disasters, the city itself, images of the natural world and passages on the birth and death of humans and animals are layered against one another, moving between black and white and colour, and among the material are news images from 1954 and footage the artist had shot years earlier in Spain. The film takes death, belonging to a place and displacement from it all at once, and the fact that it was made while Chambers knew he had leukaemia makes that concern entirely personal. The seventy nine minute Canadian production was completed in 1970, and Stan Brakhage counted it among the greatest films ever made.
