What The Heart of Me Is About
London in the 1930s. There are two sisters: Madeleine, orderly and measured, married to Rickie; and Dinah, untidy, unruly, in love with living. Dinah falls for her sister's husband and an affair begins between them. It will change all three lives for years to come. Thaddeus O'Sullivan's British film is adapted from Rosamond Lehmann's 1953 novel The Echoing Grove. Helena Bonham Carter, Olivia Williams and Paul Bettany take the leads. The telling takes no side: the one who betrays and the one betrayed are made equally understandable. Time moves back and forth, and the film gives its real weight to what lies between the two sisters.
