What Nothing Personal Is About
The film is set in Belfast, shortly after the ceasefire of 1975. Kenny is a Protestant man at the head of a Loyalist group on the Shankill Road. Liam is a Catholic and was once Kenny’s friend. The ceasefire stops nothing on the streets; the violence carries on by its own logic. The film tells the conflict not through the case each side makes but through how people are day to day. It does not ask who is right; it shows what people do. What becomes of an old friendship in that setting sits at the centre of the story. The eighty three minutes are compressed into a few days. Ian Hart, John Lynch and James Frain take the leads, with Michael Gambon also in the cast. Thaddeus O’Sullivan’s film, a joint Irish and British production, was completed in 1996.
