What The Heat Is About

Katie Dippold wrote her first feature script on the side while writing for Parks and Recreation; producer Peter Chernin bought it for 600,000 dollars before it reached other bidders. She states the model: cop duo pictures like Running Scared (1986) and Lethal Weapon (1987), but with the women doing the police work instead of riding on the back of the scooter. Paul Feig rehearses early and then lets the cast improvise, and says the drunken bar stretch was deliberately left unchoreographed. The cost shows: comic passages run long, and the drug case works less as a case to solve than as a frame keeping the two leads in one room. Shooting began on 5 July 2012 in the Boston district then called Dudley Square, now Nubian Square. The Blu-ray carries an unrated version 3 minutes longer than the theatrical cut and three commentaries, one by the original Mystery Science Theater 3000 crew. A sequel was announced, Bullock said in October 2013 she would not return, and it was shelved. A good fit if you will treat the improvised passages Feig refuses to cut away from as the real body of the film. Not for anyone who needs the drug case to hold up as a case, or who finds writing that makes profanity the character rather than the background unbearable.
