What Ghostbusters Is About

Paul Feig’s film has the old cast without the old characters. Bill Murray turns up as a sceptic out to expose the team as frauds, Dan Aykroyd as a cab driver, Sigourney Weaver as Holtzmann’s mentor. Anyone arriving for a reunion finds the original actors cast as strangers to the new crew. A bust outside the office honours Harold Ramis. The theatrical cut leaves one concrete hole in the finale. Crossing the beams, the one piece of series mechanics every viewer knows, is never set up in cinemas; the ending invokes a rule it never stated. The longer home cut restores it, with Holtzmann warning Erin about tangled beams during the concert. That cut also restores a deleted boyfriend thread and the stretch where Rowan possesses Kevin and makes police and soldiers dance, seen in cinemas only during the credits. The trailer became the most disliked film trailer in the history of YouTube. The racist abuse aimed at Leslie Jones became a separate affair, and in July 2016 one writer’s account was permanently closed. The picture cost 144 million dollars and took 229 million. A good fit if you will pick the longer cut so the beam rule is laid down before it is used. Not for anyone who wants the original actors back inside their own old roles.
