The Hideaway

A twelve-year-old boy lives with his mother in the middle of Copenhagen. His parents have separated and both give more time to their new partners than to him; the men his mother brings home are nothing like the father he does not have. A stabbing happens in a café across the street, and some time later the boy finds Funder wounded in the basement, a young offender hiding from the police. He decides to hide him, and an odd friendship grows between them. Niels Gråbøl’s seventy-minute film does not present growing up as a threshold but as something you drift into while it stays unclear who needs whom more. The record calls the boy Martin, while sources use the nickname Møv from the film’s own title, and the record mentions neither the stabbing nor the basement.
