What The Homecoming Is About
In a dreary flat in north London, a house where a psychological war never stops, a son who has become a professor of philosophy visits his family after nine years away and introduces his wife to the four men there: his father, his uncle and his two brothers. As the visit goes on the shell of courtesy cracks and it becomes clear how each of them places the others. The film was adapted from a play and keeps its theatrical construction: a single setting, long scenes, speech standing in for action. The account does not say who wins; it shows how words turn into a weapon. Ian Holm and Paul Rogers appear in Peter Hall’s hundred and eleven minute British film, completed in 1973.
