Tamara Sedelnikova What The Hot Snow Is About
In December 1942 a Soviet anti-tank battery stands in the path of the German armoured divisions trying to break through to the encircled Sixth Army at Stalingrad. The film stays almost entirely at that one position: orders, waiting, snow, fire, and a steadily shrinking number of men. Rather than staging heroics it looks at the gunners’ exhaustion and the friction among them, and lets them argue about who gave which order and why. It plays less like a war picture than like a chamber drama. Gavriil Yegiazarov directed, adapting Yuri Bondarev’s 1969 novel; Bondarev had been a battery commander in that battle and built the book out of what he had lived through. It opened in December 1972.
