What The House Is About
Imrich is building a house for his daughter Eva, stone by stone. He does nearly all the work himself and takes the house to be a gift. But Eva is about to finish school and sees moving into it as going into a prison, one she helped to build herself. She has an entirely different future in mind. Zuzana Liová's Slovak film is about how good intentions inside a family turn into pressure. The father is not a bad man; he simply wants to build his daughter's life for her and believes that is a form of love. The telling takes no side and shows the logic of both generations. The tone is calm, the spaces narrow, and the house is the film's central figure.
