What The Idlers of the Fertile Valley Is About
A wealthy man and his three sons withdraw from the city to a house in the country and pass their days doing nothing at all. The young maid does all the work. In time sleep turns into a pleasure for them and then into a dependency; the house comes to resemble a small world made of the living dead. In that world the only one who stands, who wants and who works is the woman. In the end the youngest son will try to break out of the arrangement. The film presents idleness not as a subject for humour but as the rotting of a class. Olga Karlatos plays the lead in Nikos Panayotopoulos’s hundred and eighteen minute Greek film, completed in 1978.
