What The Incredible Hulk Is About

The defining fact about Louis Leterrier’s 2008 film is what was removed from it. Leterrier and Edward Norton wanted a cut running around a hundred and thirty-five minutes, the producers insisted on under two hours, and roughly seventy minutes of origin material was taken out. What survived was compressed into the opening titles. So you watch Banner become the Hulk as a two-minute montage rather than as an act of a film; a viewer who does not know the character enters through a summary, not a scene. The second thing is the ending. Zak Penn holds the sole writing credit while Norton reworked the text throughout the shoot, and by Penn’s own later account one of Norton’s changes was to have Banner jump into Harlem of his own accord instead of being thrown from a helicopter by General Ross. Penn says he never understood it, since the character is choosing to land in a crowded neighbourhood. Norton and Tim Roth shot two thousand five hundred takes of creature movement, with facial expression captured using phosphorescent paint and strobe lighting. Not for you if you are here only for the wider Marvel thread. The Arctic opening showing Captain America in the ice was dropped after test screenings and exists only on the home release.
