What The Inspector General Is About
An illiterate stooge from a travelling medicine show drifts into a strange town and is picked up for vagrancy. The town's corrupt officials take him for the inspector general they believe is coming in disguise. Terrified that he will discover what they have been doing with the tax money, they flatter him first and then make several badly organised attempts to kill him. Henry Koster directs, and Danny Kaye sings, patters and plays a man with no identity to lose. It is loosely adapted from Gogol's play, which is also where the gallery of town officials comes from.
