What The Journey to Melonia Is About
A boy held as a slave on the industrial island of Plutonia survives a shipwreck and washes up on Melonia, which is close to paradise. Living there are the wizard Prospero, his daughter Miranda, an albatross called Ariel, a Caliban assembled out of fruit and vegetables, and a dog who recites poetry. But Plutonia wants Melonia: to industrialise it and strip the green off it. Per Åhlin's animation takes Shakespeare's Tempest and turns it straight into an environmental story. It is hand-drawn and carries its beauty and its dread at the same time; it is a children's film and the gloom in it is real. It counts among the most ambitious things Swedish animation has produced.
