What The King of the Neighborhood Is About
Gilberto Martínez Solares's 1950 Mexican comedy is among the best known films of Germán Valdés, known as Tin Tan. His character, living in a poor neighbourhood, takes on the role of a modern Robin Hood who robs the rich for the poor, while his need to hide that identity keeps colliding with the demands of ordinary life on the block. Tin Tan's comedy rests on wordplay, on the pachuco speech that mixes Spanish and English, and on musical numbers, with his regular partner Marcelo Chávez setting the rhythm alongside him. Silvia Pinal, later known for her work with Buñuel, appears here early in her career. It belongs to the popular wing of Mexican cinema's golden age. Who it's for: viewers curious about classic Mexican comedy and Tin Tan's style. Who it's not for: anyone bothered that humour built on wordplay largely disappears in translation.
