What The Last Chance Is About
In a war wrecked Italy, an American and a British soldier escape a Nazi prison train and set out for the Swiss border. With help from the Italian underground they end up leading a party of refugees from several countries, among them children, the old, and people who share no language. Leopold Lindtberg's 1945 film writes the escape not around heroism but around how solidarity gets built. The confusion of tongues works its way into the form as well: the characters have to walk together without quite understanding one another. Made as the war ended, it carries both exhaustion and hope.
