The Last Letter from Your Lover

A love story that runs in two periods. The present: Ellie is a newspaper journalist. Looking through an old file in the archive she finds letters from the 1960s. They are unsigned and it is not clear who they were written to. The 1960s: Jennifer wakes in hospital after an accident with no memory. She is told she is married, recognises her husband but feels nothing. Slowly she realises there was someone else in her life. The film runs both lines together. While Ellie follows the letters she is also dealing with her own relationship; Rory, who works in the archive, helps her. The source is Jojo Moyes's novel. What the film is interested in is the writing of letters itself: how a feeling becomes permanent once it is on paper, and what it means when it reaches someone else's hands years later. Shailene Woodley plays Jennifer, Felicity Jones plays Ellie and Callum Turner the writer of the letters. Augustine Frizzell directed. It was released on a streaming service. A properly made choice for anyone who likes classical romantic drama and period storytelling. For a viewer expecting surprise, the plot is predictable and one of the two lines is markedly stronger than the other.
