Mario Balmaseda What The Last Supper Is About
On a sugar plantation near Havana at the end of the eighteenth century, a devout count invites twelve of the people he has enslaved to his table on Holy Thursday. He washes their feet, kisses them and sits them down, meaning to teach humility, resignation and the reward that comes afterwards. Through the meal he defends his own arrangement in the language of the church. The twelve draw a conclusion from it that is not the one he intended. Tomas Gutierrez Alea built the film out of a single paragraph in the historian Manuel Moreno Fraginals's study El ingenio. What comes out is neither sermon nor lesson but a cold look at how a master's sincerity and a master's business can sit beside each other without ever disturbing one another.
