What The Twelve Chairs Is About
When the country falls to socialist revolutionaries, a wealthy woman cannot bear to hand her property over to the new government and hides all her valuables in the twelve chairs of a dining room set. After her death her nephew learns what she did; but the chairs have been nationalised and passed into the hands of a dozen different people. He sets off after them to find the treasure he believes is rightfully his. The film builds that chase as a comedy and shows what the revolution came to in daily life through the chairs. The account does not put the nephew in the right. Enrique Santisteban plays the lead in Tomas Gutierrez Alea’s ninety four minute Cuban film, completed in 1962.
