What The Last Train Is About
The account is set in the last winter of the war. A middle aged man gets off a train. He is wearing the uniform of a German officer. The man is in fact a doctor, newly called up. Where he gets off is a country station in Russia. The front is pulling back by now. The man goes to a hospital. The hospital is being cleared and they will not take him in. Outside he comes across another conscript. This man used to be an actor and is now a postman. After a shell burst he cannot hear. The two of them walk together through the snow. They meet Russians in the same condition. While the war goes on around them neither knows what to do. Pavel Romanov and Pyotr Merkuryev take the leads in Aleksei German Jr.’s Russian film of 2004.
