What The Leather Boys Is About
Reggie and Dot are a young South London couple who marry before they have had a chance to know one another. Soon after the wedding they drift apart; Dot carries on with her own life while Reggie meets Pete, another biker, and runs into something about himself he did not know. Sidney J. Furie adapted Gillian Freeman’s novel and leaned the film on the working class realism of the British new wave. The censorship of the time kept much of it implicit, but its sympathetic portrait of a gay working man makes it a turning point in British cinema.
