The Legend of Kaspar Hauser

A boy washes up on a deserted Mediterranean shore; his name is Kaspar Hauser. The time and the place are left unspecified, and the island is a heap of sand and stone. The Duchess who rules it takes the stranger's presence as a threat to her power and wants him gone. The Sheriff protects him. There is almost no speech between any of them; what passes between them is looks, dancing and techno. Davide Manuli directs, in black and white. Vincent Gallo plays two parts. The music is by Vitalic and runs almost without a break. Ninety-five minutes. It takes the real Kaspar Hauser, who appeared in nineteenth-century Germany, and moves him onto an island, into the shape of a western, and onto a dance floor.
