What The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby Is About
When his father dies and leaves the family with nothing, Nicholas is thrown on the mercy of his uncle Ralph, a moneylender. The uncle finds him a post at a school in Yorkshire, except that the place is not a school but a pit where boys are starved and beaten. Nicholas cannot stand it, takes a boy named Smike with him and runs, and the two join a travelling theatre company. Alberto Cavalcanti built the school passages of this Ealing adaptation with almost documentary hardness. Cedric Hardwicke plays Ralph. It was the first sound version of the novel.
