A woodsman accused of a murder he did not commit runs into the mountains, and while trying to stay alive there he rescues an orphaned grizzly cub and names him Ben. The bond between them is the whole centre of the film. The character was built quite freely from the real Californian mountain man John Grizzly Adams. The independent production cost a hundred and forty thousand dollars and became an unexpected box office success, followed by a television series on NBC. Dan Haggerty became identified with the part. It is the kind of film that presents nature not as an enemy but as a refuge.
