Aneesha Shah What The Lift Boy Is About
Jonathan Augustin’s first film is set in Mumbai. Raju is twenty-four with no plan of any kind when his father, a lift operator in a smart apartment block, has a heart attack on duty and Raju has to take over the job. The work turns out not to consist of standing in a lift: as he gets to know the residents he begins to work something out about his own life, and an unlikely relationship forms with Maureen D’Souza, who owns the building. It is a small English-language Indian production that found its audience late, when Netflix picked up worldwide rights in 2020. Moin Khan plays Raju and Nyla Masood plays Maureen.
