The Little Fox

The little fox Vuk loses his family to a hunter. His uncle Karak finds him and raises him: how to hunt, how to keep away from people, which smells mean danger. As Vuk grows he has one purpose, to avenge his family and rescue his sister. For that he goes into the hunter's coop, then his hut, and finally his house. Attila Dargay adapted István Fekete's novel, and the result is among the best-known works of Hungarian animation. The line is hand-drawn, the palette warm, and the natural world worked out in detail. The narrative gives the animals speech without making them human; hunting, death and the food chain are plainly present. Judit Pogány voices Vuk. Who it's for: Viewers who like classic hand-drawn animation, animal stories set in nature, and Eastern European animation. Who it's not for: Death and hunting are shown directly and may be hard for very young children. The rhythm is also slow next to modern animation.
