What The Treasure of Swamp Castle Is About
This Hungarian animated film directed by Attila Dargay was adapted from two books by Mór Jókai. The story has a buried treasure, a lost inheritance, a war and a small black cat following it all the way through. The villains are drawn in broad strokes: a governor with a pressure release valve in his skull and a fat baron devoted to his pigs. Some of the heroes are Roma and the film places them on the good side, though it draws them according to the cartoon conventions of its period, which makes the portrayal arguable from here. Dargay's line is the most recognisable style in Hungarian animation and the film has been watched by generations there. It runs seventy six minutes and is aimed squarely at children.
