The Little Mermaid

Vladimir Bychkov's 1976 film is a Soviet and Bulgarian co-production adapting Andersen's tale. The little mermaid falls in love with a prince she saves from a storm; a witch gives her human legs in exchange for her blue hair, but every step begins to cause great pain. The film does not soften the tale. Unlike later animated versions the price here is real: pain, silence and loss. A wandering minstrel figure guides the narrative and adds distance to the story. The visual design is typical of Eastern Bloc children's films of the period: real locations, handmade costumes, limited effects. The underwater scenes look primitive today, but the film's tone remains effective regardless. Who it's for: those curious about Soviet-era fairy tale adaptations. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a cheerful tale for small children; the film ends sadly and does not soften it.
