What The Long Night of Francisco Sanctis Is About
Francisco Márquez and Andrea Testa's 2017 Argentine film covers a single night in Buenos Aires in 1977. Sanctis, an office clerk, is called by a friend he has not seen in twenty years, who asks something of him. What is asked is simple: to warn two people they are about to be taken. Sanctis has no interest in politics and has a family; the narrative leaves the decision hanging through the night and offers a chance to turn back at every step. The film consists almost entirely of walking and bus rides. No violence is shown; the fear is built from the emptiness of the streets and from silence. It is adapted from a novel. Who it's for: those who like Argentine political drama and quiet thrillers. Who it's not for: viewers expecting action; almost nothing happens across the film.
