The Longest Nite

The Longest Nite, officially credited to Patrick Yau Tat-Chi, was largely completed by Johnnie To and his longtime collaborator Wai Ka-fai; Yau shot only five scenes, Wai rewrote the script during filming, and To took over the project and finished it. The film was produced by To's own company, Milkyway Image. It stars Lau Ching-wan and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, following a corrupt cop caught in the middle of a violent gang war in Macau, trying to broker peace between two triad leaders while being shadowed by a mysterious man. Lau Ching-wan was nominated for Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his performance. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Hong Kong thriller whose official director credit hides the fact that two other filmmakers actually completed it, set amid a Macau gang war. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a clear, linear narrative, since the film leans into a dark, morally ambiguous crime world.
