The Man from Majorca

Bo Widerberg's 1984 Swedish film opens with a robbery at a post office. A crowded post office is robbed on St Lucy's Day and within a fortnight two witnesses are dead. Johansson and Jarnebring, the first officers on the scene, keep the investigation going, and the trail leads to someone senior in the security police. From that point the film stops being a crime story and starts describing an institutional blockage: the file is closed, superiors tell them to withdraw, and the two officers are caught between risking their careers and staying quiet. Widerberg builds the tension without display, using bureaucratic conversation and waiting rather than chases or shootouts. It was made at a time when Swedish confidence in its own institutions had been shaken, and it carries that unease. Who it's for: viewers who like Nordic crime and slow suspense. Who it's not for: anyone expecting an investigation that reaches a resolution; the film does not allow one.
