Raven's End

1936, Malmö. Anders is in his early twenties and wants to be a writer. He lives with his family in a one-room flat in the working-class quarter called Korpen. His father is out of work and drinks; his mother works in a laundry and keeps the household going. Anders finishes his first novel, sends it to a publisher, and for the first time thinks getting out of there might be possible. Then two things happen: the reply from the publisher is not what he hoped, and his girlfriend becomes pregnant. It is Bo Widerberg's second film, made at a time when the director was openly setting himself against Swedish cinema; the result is not a standard social drama. The tension between Anders's wish to get out and what he owes his family is never resolved. Thommy Berggren has the lead. The film was Sweden's Oscar submission and was nominated for best foreign language film.
