What The Man Who Was Sherlock Holmes Is About
Two out-of-work private detectives hit on a way to get noticed in Berlin: one dresses as Sherlock Holmes, the other as Watson. They tell nobody an outright lie; they simply do not correct anyone. Everyone believes them. On a train they find themselves after counterfeiters and a set of stolen rare stamps. As it escalates, both the police and the actual criminals start taking them seriously. They end up in court, where an unexpected witness appears in the room: Arthur Conan Doyle. Karl Hartl directs, with Hans Albers and Heinz Rühmann as the pair. A hundred and six minutes. A large hit in Germany at the time, and entirely affectionate about Holmes rather than reverent.
