Claudio Casadio What The Man Who Will Come Is About
A winter and a summer in the mountain villages near Bologna. The peasants work the fields, argue about how much help to give the partisans and wait for the Germans. We see it through the eyes of an eight-year-old girl who has stopped speaking. What comes in the autumn is in the historical record: in 1944 SS units killed hundreds of civilians in this area, in one of the largest massacres of civilians in Western Europe. Giorgio Diritti had it played in the local dialect and kept the violence away from spectacle; the hardest scenes pass in silence.
