What The Matchmaker Is About
Marcy works on the re-election campaign of an American senator. To win the Irish-American vote, the senator needs an Irish ancestor, and the job of finding one falls to her. She travels to a small town called Ballinagra. But the town is preparing for its matchmaking festival that very week, and the local matchmaker is determined to pair Marcy off with one of the village bachelors. Mark Joffe directs, with Janeane Garofalo as Marcy and David O'Hara opposite her. The festival in Ballinagra is based on a real tradition, the matchmaking festival held every year at Lisdoonvarna in Ireland. The film joins a rural comedy to a romantic one.
