What The Matchmaker Is About

Set in 1884, the film follows Dolly Levi, a widow who keeps herself by all sorts of means and mostly by matchmaking. Horace Vandergelder, a wealthy and miserly merchant from Yonkers, pays her to find him a wife, but Dolly has the position in mind for herself. While he travels to New York to meet the woman proposed to him, she puts him off with an invented name. At the same time two of the merchant’s employees abandon the shop and run off to the city, and everyone ends up by chance in the same restaurant. Adapted from the play by Thornton Wilder, this film later became the source of the musical Hello, Dolly! Shirley Booth, Anthony Perkins and Shirley MacLaine appear in Joseph Anthony’s hundred and one minute film, completed in 1958.
