The Mentalist

Walmer Sitohang's 2011 Indonesian film is about a rivalry between two mentalists. Ronggo Sewu, a former assistant, sets out to embarrass his old master during performances. The film places the tricks inside the plot. The narrative ties the rivalry to an argument between magic and skill and leaves it unclear who is really doing what. Deddy Corbuzier plays himself, which is the film's starting point. The tone is close to a showcase and the acting secondary. Who it's for: those curious about Indonesian television culture and illusion shows. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a solid plot; the film is built on the tricks.
