José Manuel Mendes What The Metamorphosis of Birds Is About
The Metamorphosis of Birds is director Catarina Vasconcelos's experimental docu memoir, weaving her own family history, centered on her naval officer grandfather Henrique, who spent long stretches at sea, and her grandmother Beatriz, with poetic reenactment rather than straight documentary footage. It premiered in the Encounters section of the 70th Berlinale, winning both the FIPRESCI Award and the Encounters Special Jury Prize, and went on to collect roughly forty prizes across the festival circuit. Who it's for: viewers open to poetic, personal family narratives that depart from conventional documentary form. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a clear chronology and traditional narrative structure, since the film favors an associative, fragmented approach.
