What The Middleman Is About
A bright, idealistic graduate braces himself for a cut throat world and then cannot get a foothold in a job market crowded with thousands like him. He eventually sets up on his own as a middleman and discovers that business bears no resemblance to his principles. Satyajit Ray's 1976 film closes the Calcutta trilogy, after Pratidwandi and Seemabaddha, adapted from Mani Shankar Mukherjee's novel. Ray follows how a young man compromises by degrees, which line he crosses, and what that comes to mean in his own eyes. It is generally taken as the bleakest of the three.
