What The Milk of Sorrow Is About
Fausta is the daughter of a woman raped during Peru's years of internal conflict. According to a folk belief called the milk of sorrow, a mother's fear passes to her child through the breast, and Fausta has lived her whole life inside that fear, keeping a potato inside herself as protection. When her mother dies she has to find money for the burial, and leaves the house for the first time. Claudia Llosa does not look at the conflict directly but at what it left behind. Largely in Quechua, it won the Golden Bear in 2009 and was Peru's first Oscar nominee.
