What The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven Is About
The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven, produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, is considered China's first feature length domestic animated film, made with roughly 130,000 hand drawn ink illustrations over a four year production process. Its first part was completed in 1961 and the second in 1964, shown together for the first time in 1965; the 1961 version won six prizes, including Best Film, at the London International Film Festival. Shortly after completion, though, the film was banned during the Cultural Revolution for allegedly containing anti government messages, and its makers were sent to work in the countryside; when Chinese cinemas reopened, it broke box office records. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Chinese animation classic drawn entirely by hand over four years, one that won international awards yet was banned in its own country. Who it's not for: viewers expecting modern digital animation, since this was made with 1960s hand drawn technique.
