The Night Comes For Us

One of the harshest examples of Indonesian action, directed by Timo Tjahjanto. Ito is an enforcer for a crime organisation known as the Triad. Ordered to kill an entire village, he chooses to save the one surviving child, and from that moment his own organisation is hunting him. The rest is a flight and a succession of fights. The fight design is deliberately painful: butcher's knives, glass, bone and kitchen implements serve as weapons. Characters take wounds, slow down, and keep fighting while exhausted. Joe Taslim plays Ito and Iko Uwais the man sent after him, both known from The Raid films. The bar fight involving Julie Estelle's character is the most discussed sequence in the film. Before you watch, know this: it contains extreme violence, and that is not an overstatement; the scenes are long, bloody and unadorned. The story is thin and the characters are shallow, and the film does not try to hide it, putting all of its weight into the fighting.
