What The Night My Number Came Up Is About
At a dinner party in Hong Kong a naval officer describes a dream: a small Dakota bound for Tokyo with thirteen people aboard, the radio dead, the fuel running out, and a stony beach appearing through a gap in the cloud. Air Marshal Hardie, sitting at the same table, laughs it off, and boards that flight the next morning. Then the details start arriving one by one. The passenger list changes, the route changes, the weather closes in. This 1955 Ealing picture comes from something Air Marshal Sir Victor Goddard said had happened to him, adapted by R. C. Sherriff with Michael Redgrave in the lead. It runs on the feeling of inevitability rather than on fright.
