What The Shiralee Is About
A travelling worker moving from job to job across the Australian country comes home after a long trip, finds his wife with another man and takes his small daughter Buster with him as he leaves. What follows is the road the two of them walk together: from town to town, from farm to farm, with a swag on his back and a child beside him. At first the man counts the girl as a burden, but as the road lengthens a bond forms between them that is never put into words, and fatherhood becomes a decision for him. In Leslie Norman’s ninety nine minute Australian film, Peter Finch plays the father and Dana Wilson plays Buster, with Elizabeth Sellars and Rosemary Harris in the cast. It was completed in 1957 and is one of the films Ealing Studios made in Australia.
